Nexter’s KNDS VBCI Mk II to Transform Qatar Infantry

French company Nexter, part of KNDS, has introduced its advanced VBCI Mk II (Infantry Combat Armored Vehicle) to upgrade Qatari infantry units. This proposal, reflecting French military innovation, aims to enhance the combat capabilities of Qatar’s forces while strengthening the nation’s defense technology and industrial base in line with its ambitious 2030 vision.

The VBCI Mk II, an upgraded version of the proven French VBCI Infantry Fighting Vehicle, is specifically designed to meet the operational needs of the Qatar Armed Forces. Nexter’s commitment to a “100% French solution” goes beyond just supplying military hardware; it includes establishing a final assembly line, maintenance and support facilities, and a production line for a range of ammunition in Qatar. This initiative aims to enhance Qatar’s sovereignty and self-reliance in defense.

At DIMDEX 2024, Nexter showcases not only the VBCI Mk II but also a new line of ammunition for medium-caliber arms, artillery, and main battle tanks, compatible with platforms like the  Leopard 2A7 and PzH 2000 155mm self-propelled howitzer. This highlights Nexter’s leadership in munitions innovation and its ability to meet diverse battlefield requirements.

The VBCI Mk II exemplifies Nexter’s excellence in armored vehicle design and its collaboration with the Qatar Armed Forces, reminiscent of past projects like the  AMX-30 tank. It features the advanced T40 turret, equipped with the Akeron MP missile system and a 40mm cased-telescoped gun, capable of penetrating 140mm of armor from 1,500 meters. This combination offers remarkable versatility against various threats, from infantry to main battle tanks.

The T40 turret and  Akeron MP anti-tank missile system represent cutting-edge military technology, significantly enhancing the firepower and precision of infantry fighting vehicles like the VBCI Mk II. Their integration marks a major advancement in operational capabilities on the modern battlefield.

Designed for modularity and adaptability, the T40 turret can be fitted with various armaments, fulfilling multiple combat roles. Its advanced targeting systems allow for high-precision engagements while prioritizing crew protection and situational awareness in diverse threat environments.

Complementing the turret, the Akeron MP missile system delivers exceptional anti-armor capabilities, effective against current and future threats, including tanks with explosive reactive armor. Versatile in launch platforms, it can engage targets using both direct and top-attack modes, exploiting vulnerabilities in armored vehicles.

The combination of the T40 turret and Akeron MP missile system enhances the VBCI Mk II’s operational flexibility, enabling it to undertake a range of missions from anti-tank warfare to infantry support, making it an invaluable asset on the battlefield. Together, these systems set new benchmarks for armored vehicle performance.

Having served the French Army for over a decade, the VBCI IFV combat effectiveness is well-established, with a proven track record of protecting soldiers during operations. With this proposal, Nexter aims to strengthen its longstanding partnership with Qatar and significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Qatar Armed Forces, ushering in a new era of defense modernization for the nation.
