Oman to Unveil Updated Artificial Intelligence Policy

Oman is gearing up to release a revised national artificial intelligence (AI) policy in the first quarter of 2025, according to a local media report.

The new policy framework will outline regulations for artificial intelligence development and usage while ensuring national interests are protected, the Oman Daily Observer reported. Hassan Al Lawati, who leads the national AI and advanced technology program at the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, confirmed the update.

Oman’s original AI policy was introduced in 2021, but this revision aims to integrate new technological advancements and incorporate feedback from industry stakeholders.

As part of its broader digital strategy, the ministry launched an enhanced AI executive program in September 2024, with ambitious goals to boost the digital economy’s contribution to GDP, from 2% to 5% by 2030 and reach 10% by 2040.

AI investments in Oman have surged, hitting OR 60 million ($155.9 million) in 2024, according to reports. This year, the government plans to develop an Omani large language model, establish an AI innovation studio, and launch an open data platform to drive growth in the sector.

In a significant move last December, the Oman Investment Authority (OIA), the country’s sovereign wealth fund, acquired a stake in xAI, the AI venture founded by tech billionaire Elon Musk.
