The move signals a strategic pivot for ByteDance, which is stepping back from gaming to focus more aggressively on generative AI. The company originally acquired Moonton in 2021 for around $4 billion.

Moonton, the developer behind Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, remains a high-value asset, with the game surpassing 1.5 billion downloads and maintaining strong traction across Southeast Asia. The valuation reflects sustained growth despite intensifying competition in the mobile gaming space.

Leadership continuity will be maintained, with CEO Zhang Yunfan and the existing management team staying on. Employees are also expected to benefit from new incentive structures following the acquisition.

For Savvy, the acquisition strengthens its fast-growing global portfolio. Backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the company has been actively investing across game development, publishing, and esports infrastructure.

The deal aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030, which positions gaming as a core pillar of economic diversification and digital innovation.

Why Savvy’s Acquisition Matters to MENA

This acquisition signals MENA’s rising influence in the global gaming industry.

By adding a globally successful title to its portfolio, Savvy Games Group is accelerating the region’s transition from gaming consumer to content owner and publisher.

The move also reinforces Saudi Arabia’s ambition to build a full-scale gaming ecosystem—spanning development, esports, and infrastructure—positioning MENA as a serious contender in the global digital entertainment economy.
