Alibaba Philanthropy and the Jack Ma Foundation have unveiled a USD 1.5 million grant to support African entrepreneurs, as part of the 2026 edition of Africa’s Business Heroes. The flagship programme aims to empower founders addressing key challenges across the continent, including in underrepresented markets like Tunisia, Namibia, and Zambia.

Now in its eighth edition, the initiative runs under the theme Defining Africa’s Future Today and focuses on sectors critical to long-term growth: climate-smart agriculture, digital finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and emerging technologies. Beyond funding, participants receive mentorship, strategic guidance, and exposure to investors and business partners to help scale their startups sustainably.
For the 2026 cycle, the program expands its recognition pool to the top 100 finalists, providing wider visibility among global investors, corporates, and networks. Organizers say this allows more entrepreneurs to benefit from increased market access, even if they do not reach the final stages.
“The next wave of Africa’s economic transformation will be driven by local founders solving practical problems,” the foundation said. “By providing financial support, mentorship, and visibility, we help startups scale responsibly and create jobs across the region.”
The funding and mentorship are part of a broader effort to strengthen cross-border collaboration and accelerate the growth of Africa’s startup ecosystem. The grant will help founders build capacity, scale operations, and connect with potential investors and partners across Africa and beyond.
Why Alibaba Funding Matters to MENA & Africa
The initiative is strategically significant for both Africa and the MENA region. By including countries like Tunisia, the program fosters entrepreneurship in North Africa, encouraging innovation and regional economic development. It bridges investment gaps for underrepresented markets, helps scale critical sectors such as fintech and healthcare, and facilitates cross-border collaboration. For MENA investors and corporates, this presents opportunities to engage with emerging African startups and support regional growth and knowledge transfer.
Africa’s Business Heroes 2026 underlines the importance of local innovation for sustainable development while positioning the continent—and North Africa in particular—as a hub for high-impact startups poised to address regional and global challenges.
