The Web Summit, one of the world’s largest tech conferences, kicked off in Doha, on the 26th of February 2024, marking its debut in the Middle East. The event has drawn entrepreneurs, investors, and business leaders from around the globe, with a spotlight on artificial intelligence (AI) and technological innovation.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani inaugurated the conference by announcing a significant investment initiative. “Our sovereign wealth fund will invest over $1 billion in international and regional venture capital funds,” he said. The “Fund of Funds” program is designed to foster innovation and enhance Qatar’s position as a regional IT hub.
Qatar Airways, the official sponsor of the Web Summit, used the platform to unveil its latest technological innovation—a Generative AI experience aimed at revolutionizing travel planning. The AI tool leverages frictionless visual interactions and an interactive 3D map to tailor travel recommendations, simplifying the planning process for customers.
Qatar Airways’ Chief Commercial Officer, Thierry Antinori, commented, “Qatar Airways is helping push the boundaries of what to expect from the travel experience of the future. Our approach is to always focus on gaining advantages for our passengers and employees along with operational efficiencies by using technology.”

Antinori further added, “The airline and its subsidiaries are constantly evolving, working hand-in-hand with partners, stakeholders, and regulators to utilize the latest advances in aviation and travel technology. It is an exciting time for the airline’s innovative and ideating workforce, and we are working to foster a culture of creativity and innovation.”
The conference also featured Trevor Noah, former host of The Daily Show, who spoke on the impact of AI. “I’ve never stopped loving tech and I’ve never stopped trying to learn all the ways we can use it effectively,” Noah remarked. “I think we often [say], ‘Will tech replace us?’ Well, I think that means we have to have a very limited definition of what ‘us’ is.”
As the summit progresses over the next four days, attendees are expected to engage in extensive networking and explore new opportunities. The event is set to transform Doha’s Exhibition and Convention Center into a hub of innovation and collaboration, reflecting Qatar’s growing role as a leader in technology and entrepreneurship.
