Doha IX Debuts as Qatar’s First Commercial Internet Hub

Qatar has marked a major milestone in its digital journey with the launch of Doha IX, the country’s first commercial Internet Exchange Point (IXP). The initiative, spearheaded by Ooredoo in partnership with global interconnection leader DE-CIX, is hosted in Ooredoo’s cutting-edge data centre and promises to transform how Qatar connects to the global digital ecosystem.

Doha IX establishes a neutral interconnection hub where traffic can be exchanged seamlessly between regional and international players. Hyperscalers, cloud providers, ISPs, and content delivery networks will now have a local platform to interconnect, reducing latency and lowering costs for businesses and consumers alike.

Unlike traditional routing, which often depends on distant hubs, the Doha IX model keeps data closer to home. This ensures faster, more secure, and cost-efficient connectivity, critical for businesses undergoing digital transformation as well as government services that demand reliability.

One of Doha IX’s standout features is its ability to plug local players into global services. For example, through MAPS (Microsoft Azure Peering Service), enterprise and government customers in Qatar gain direct, private access to Microsoft SaaS products like MS Teams and Outlook, boosting both performance and security.

In parallel, Doha IX has secured recognition as a Verified Peering Provider for Google Cloud and Workspace, giving Qatari businesses high-performance links to Google’s enterprise applications. By enabling direct routes to such platforms, Doha IX not only streamlines operations but also elevates Qatar’s competitiveness in the regional digital economy.

Driving Digital Transformation and National Vision 2030

The launch also integrates Doha IX into Ooredoo’s wider suite of services, including IP Transit, Multi-Cloud Connect, Hosting, Co-location, and International Connectivity. This alignment offers businesses a one-stop solution for their digital infrastructure needs.

From an economic perspective, the move supports Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which seeks to position the country as a regional connectivity hub. By creating a world-class interconnection ecosystem, Doha IX is expected to attract international players while empowering local enterprises to scale more efficiently.

Why this Matters for the MENA Region

For the broader Middle East, Doha IX sets a precedent in localising traffic exchange and strengthening digital sovereignty. As demand for cloud services, fintech solutions, and AI-powered applications accelerates across MENA, the presence of a robust IXP in Qatar enhances resilience, reduces dependency on international routing, and encourages regional collaboration.

In short, Doha IX is more than just infrastructure; it’s a strategic lever for digital growth in both Qatar and the wider MENA digital economy.
