QatarEnergy Unveils Plans for Innovative Salt Plant

QatarEnergy has announced plans to build a cutting-edge salt production plant in the Um Al Houl area, a key initiative aimed at enhancing industrial localization and economic sustainability. This ambitious project is a joint venture with Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding Company (MPHC), Qatar Industrial Manufacturing Co. (QIMC), and other strategic partners. As part of QatarEnergy’s TAWTEEN localization program, the plant is expected to cost approximately QAR 1 billion (US $275 million) and will produce both industrial and table salts for local use and export. Additionally, the facility will manufacture bromine, potassium chlorides, and demineralized water, contributing to product diversification and economic growth.

Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, emphasized the project’s importance. “This initiative is a milestone in our efforts to support industrial localization and promote sustainability in Qatar’s energy sector. It reflects our commitment to innovation and economic growth, core principles of Qatar’s National Vision 2030,” he stated. Al-Kaabi reiterated QatarEnergy’s focus on strengthening local industrial capabilities through the TAWTEEN program, noting that transforming waste into a valuable resource sets new standards for efficiency and resilience in the industry.

The facility will employ innovative technologies, utilizing reject water recovery from reverse osmosis desalination units to convert wastewater into a valuable resource. With a production capacity of one million tons per year, the project aims to significantly reduce Qatar’s reliance on imported raw materials, replacing the 850,000 tons of table and industrial salts currently imported annually.

As part of the TAWTEEN program, this project will leverage initiatives designed to enhance local content and support the growth of domestic industries, exemplifying a strong public-private partnership focused on achieving national goals. Since its inception in 2019, TAWTEEN has launched 78 investment opportunities towards a target of 100, aiming to localize services and industries within Qatar’s energy sector. The program has also generated 7,000 white-collar jobs, highlighting its positive impact on the local economy. This landmark salt production plant marks a significant advance for QatarEnergy, aligning with Qatar’s broader vision for sustainable development and economic diversification.
