In addition, the vehicles feature automated control systems designed to improve driving efficiency and significantly reduce the risk of human error — a key factor in enhancing road safety.

The new route builds on earlier pilot phases, during which autonomous vehicles completed more than 1,700 trips, transported over 3,000 passengers, and covered upwards of 30,000 kilometres. These trials provided operational insights that are now shaping broader deployment plans.

The rollout aligns with the goals of Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy and Vision 2030, both of which prioritise innovation, sustainability, and the development of advanced infrastructure.

Authorities plan to expand autonomous vehicle routes to additional locations across the Kingdom as part of a phased approach to building a fully integrated smart transport ecosystem.

Why Riyadh Autonomous Vehicle Matters to MENA

Autonomous mobility is moving from pilot to reality in the Gulf. For MENA, this signals growing investment in smart cities, AI-driven transport, and future-ready infrastructure — creating opportunities for startups, logistics players, and urban tech innovation.
