Saudi Arabia Deploys World's Largest AI Road Fleet for Hajj

The Saudi Arabia Roads General Authority (RGA) has activated the world’s largest AI-powered road inspection fleet to monitor key travel routes during this year’s Hajj, a groundbreaking move to ensure the safety of over 1.67 million pilgrims.

The 18-vehicle fleet, equipped with five types of cutting-edge monitoring technologies, is part of the Kingdom’s broader tech-heavy approach to managing the world’s largest Islamic pilgrimage.

Each unit leverages real-time data, AI analysis, and sensor-driven diagnostics to assess road integrity and preemptively address safety risks across thousands of kilometers:

  • 7 Surface Damage Scanners: Equipped with high-res cameras, lasers, GPS, and onboard storage to detect cracks and surface wear in real-time.
  • 4 Roughness Index Units: Measure smoothness using laser-based sensors for better driving comfort and safety.
  • 3 Radar Units: Penetrate road surfaces to assess pavement layer thickness and structural durability.
  • 3 Deflection Measurement Systems: Evaluate how roadways bear traffic loads, helping prevent sudden infrastructure failures.
  • 1 Skid Resistance Unit: Tests friction under simulated wet conditions—critical for preventing accidents during extreme weather.
  • 1 Mobile Imaging Scanner: Examines signage and roadside elements for hazards and maintenance needs.
