In a landmark move for Egypt’s agricultural sector, SEKEM has rolled out health insurance coverage for 40,000 farmers across its community, in partnership with Nice Deer’s InsurTech platform. The initiative, delivered through SEKEM’s EcoHealth and the Egyptian Biodynamic Association, aims to bridge a long-standing healthcare gap for rural workers while advancing SEKEM’s broader mission of economic, social, cultural, and ecological development.
The scheme connects farmers to a nationwide network of over 8,500 pharmacies, hospitals, labs, and clinics, removing the red tape that often makes healthcare access cumbersome. Nice Deer’s AI-powered InsurTech tools streamline digital claims, approvals, and fraud detection, ensuring farmers can quickly access care for everything from routine illnesses to urgent treatment needs.
Mostafa Medhat, CEO of Nice Deer, described the initiative as proof of what’s possible when “a pioneering organisation partners with technology built for impact.” Hatem Shafie, Managing Director of EcoHealth, said the rollout reflects a “promise kept” after decades of commitment to farmers’ wellbeing. Meanwhile, Engy Shalash, co-founder of Nice Deer, emphasised that this project is not just digitisation but “amplifying human impact.”
Why It Matters for Egypt’s Farmers
Egypt’s agricultural workforce often struggles with limited access to reliable healthcare, particularly in rural areas. By linking technology with SEKEM’s community-based model, this initiative removes barriers to coverage for tens of thousands of families. Farmers can now access quicker care, fewer administrative delays, and transparent health services, critical factors in a sector where downtime from illness can directly impact livelihoods.

SEKEM, founded in 1977, has long blended sustainable agriculture with education and healthcare through its “Sustainability Flower” framework, ensuring that projects flourish across economy, society, culture, and ecology. This health insurance rollout marks another milestone in aligning its grassroots social mission with systemic impact.
Nice Deer already serves over 1 million Egyptians, and its collaboration with SEKEM demonstrates how InsurTech can scale social innovation. Beyond Egypt, the project sets a precedent for other MENA markets, where agriculture remains a backbone of local economies but farmer welfare often lags behind.
As coverage takes effect, the partnership underscores a simple but powerful principle: supporting farmers sustains entire nations. In a region that depends heavily on Egypt’s agricultural output, empowering the hands that feed millions is more than a social good; it’s a strategic necessity.
