Acquirers, banks and financial institutions that process transactions on behalf of merchants play a central role in card payments. During authorisation, they send real-time transaction requests through card networks to issuing banks, which approve or decline payments within seconds.

However, many of these systems were built for an earlier generation of commerce. As digital payments scale rapidly, legacy infrastructure is increasingly strained by demands for higher uptime, real-time risk management, and regulatory flexibility across markets.

Visa’s Intelligent Authorization is designed to address these challenges through a single API integration. The solution enables acquirers to process transactions across both global and local card networks through a single connection, thereby reducing operational complexity and improving efficiency.

According to Visa, the platform delivers 99.999% uptime and achieves an average global approval rate of 96.3%. It can be deployed either as a primary authorisation engine or alongside existing systems to enhance resilience and ensure business continuity.

Leila Serhan, Senior Vice President and Group Country Manager for North Africa, Levant and Pakistan at Visa, said the launch reflects the need to upgrade infrastructure built for a different era. She noted that the platform enables more reliable payment processing while preparing institutions for future demands.

Beyond reliability, the system also enhances real-time decision-making by providing transaction insights and updates. This allows acquirers to approve more legitimate payments, manage fraud risk more effectively, and streamline processes such as settlement.

The rollout comes as digital commerce continues to expand across Egypt and the wider region, increasing pressure on financial institutions to upgrade core payment infrastructure.

Why Visa Intelligent Authorization Matters to MENA

As digital payments surge across MENA, outdated infrastructure is becoming a bottleneck. Solutions like this help banks improve approval rates, reduce fraud, and scale reliably — critical for supporting e-commerce growth, fintech innovation, and financial inclusion across the region.
