Google Launches AI Gmail Inbox and UCP for Agent Commerce

Google expands AI Gmail Inbox features and launches UCP to power AI-driven shopping agents across global commerce platforms.

Google has rolled out new artificial intelligence features for Gmail while also introducing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard designed to enable AI-powered shopping agents across digital commerce platforms.

The moves underscore Google’s broader effort to embed AI deeper into everyday productivity tools and online commerce, as competition intensifies around agentic AI systems.

Google is enhancing Gmail with new AI capabilities built on its Gemini models, aimed at helping users manage growing email volumes more efficiently. The company has introduced AI Overviews, which generate concise summaries of long or complex email threads, allowing users to quickly grasp key points without reading entire conversations.

Users can also ask natural-language questions within Gmail, such as locating a past service provider or identifying specific information from previous emails, and receive precise, context-aware responses. AI-generated summaries are available at no cost to all Gmail users, while interactive question-based AI Overviews require a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription.

Additional updates include improvements to tools such as Help Me Write, Suggested Replies, and Proofread, enabling users to draft, refine, and respond to emails more quickly. Google said responses can now better match an individual’s tone and writing style. The company also plans to introduce deeper personalization next month by allowing Gmail to draw contextual signals from other Google apps, with user consent.

Alongside the Gmail updates, Google announced the launch of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open framework designed to allow AI shopping agents to handle product discovery, payments, and post-purchase interactions across multiple retailers and platforms.

UCP is designed to work alongside existing standards, including the Agent2Agent (A2A) and Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), creating a unified infrastructure that allows AI agents to transact on behalf of users and businesses.

The protocol was developed in collaboration with major retailers and platforms, including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart. It has also been endorsed by more than 20 companies, including Visa, Mastercard, Flipkart, and Home Depot.

Google said the goal is to reduce fragmentation in digital commerce and enable AI agents to operate seamlessly across different shopping environments, benefiting both consumers and merchants.

The parallel rollout of Gmail AI tools and the Universal Commerce Protocol highlights Google’s strategy to move AI from experimental use cases into practical, scalable applications for productivity and commerce.

As AI agents increasingly act on behalf of users—managing communications, purchases, and transactions—Google is positioning itself as a key infrastructure provider across both workplace software and global e-commerce ecosystems.

Why Google AI Gmail Inbox Matters to MENA

Google’s expansion of AI Gmail Inbox features and the launch of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) could have significant implications for MENA’s fast-growing digital economy. Email remains a critical business tool across the region, especially for SMEs, government entities, and cross-border trade, where AI-powered summarisation and automation can improve productivity and decision-making.

At the same time, UCP positions AI shopping agents as a new layer of commerce infrastructure—relevant for MENA markets investing heavily in fintech, e-commerce, and digital payments. As Gulf countries accelerate AI adoption and platform interoperability, open standards like UCP could support regional retailers, payment providers, and startups seeking to plug into global commerce ecosystems without rebuilding their stacks from scratch.
