Leading pan-African e-commerce platform Jumia has officially launched its “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) service in Algeria, in partnership with Diar Dzair, a local financial services provider.
The initiative seeks to make online shopping more accessible by allowing consumers to pay in installments, tackling long-standing challenges in Algeria’s digital commerce landscape.
According to Liès-Paul Mollard, CEO of Jumia Algeria, the BNPL rollout is part of the company’s broader strategy to build a more inclusive e-commerce ecosystem and strengthen the digital economy.
“This new service is part of the company’s efforts to build a more inclusive e-commerce environment and to boost the growth of the digital economy,” said Mollard.
“Integrating innovative payment solutions aligns with global trends and seeks to enhance consumers’ purchasing power.”
Why It Matters
The new BNPL offering is expected to:
- Increase online sales volumes by making purchases more affordable
- Expand Jumia’s customer base, especially among younger and budget-conscious shoppers
- Address key barriers in the Algerian market, including low adoption of electronic payment methods and limited access to consumer credit
- Encourage digital payment adoption in a country where cash remains dominant in most retail transactions
By enabling installment-based purchases, Jumia and Diar Dzair are jointly working to offer greater purchasing flexibility and drive financial inclusion in a market ripe for digital transformation.
Looking Ahead
The launch of BNPL in Algeria is part of Jumia’s regional strategy to expand its financial services offering across key African markets.
As the company continues to invest in digital infrastructure and fintech partnerships, it aims to bridge the gap between traditional retail and modern commerce, especially in underbanked communities.
The move comes at a time when global e-commerce players are increasingly adopting BNPL as a way to boost sales and retain users, especially in emerging markets where credit access remains a hurdle.
With this step, Jumia strengthens its position as Algeria’s leading digital marketplace and continues its mission to make online shopping more affordable, accessible, and inclusive.
