The UAE’s AI vision advances with the launch of a powerhouse Centre of Excellence in Dubai, driving sovereign AI innovation through research, industry, and education.
The UAE’s AI Vision has taken another decisive step toward strengthening its sovereign AI capabilities with the launch of a new AI Centre of Excellence at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD). Located in Dubai Knowledge Park, the Centre marks a significant expansion of the country’s long-term AI strategy. It reinforces its ambition to become a global benchmark for responsible, high-impact AI development.

The Centre is a collaboration between Lakeba Group, DoxAI, AqlanX, and UOWD, combining academic research with industry expertise. According to statements shared during the inauguration, the mission is clear: to build, deploy, and eventually export AI technologies that originate in the UAE—serving local needs first while maintaining global relevance.
The event drew high-level participation from TECOM Group, Microsoft UAE, UOW Global Enterprises, and representatives from Australia, reflecting the cross-sector confidence in the Centre’s potential. Such alignment between academia, industry, and government typically signals rapid acceleration in innovation outcomes.
Unlike many research announcements, the Centre debuted with tangible initiatives already underway. These include:
- Arabic Large Language Models (LLMs)
- Real-time decision intelligence systems
- AI-powered cybersecurity tools
- Multilingual AI applications
- A tomography research project using electromagnetic data to analyse biological tissue patterns
The emphasis on culturally aligned and multilingual AI is expected to become a strategic differentiator for the UAE, especially as countries worldwide race to secure sovereign control over foundational technologies.
UAE’s AI Vision Backed by Leadership
Giuseppe Porcelli of Lakeba described the Centre as a “declaration of intent” for the UAE to produce AI with global impact.
UOWD President Professor Mohamed Salem emphasised the value of exposing students and researchers to industry-led innovation, and Marisa Mastroianni highlighted the importance of bridging academic research with commercial execution. This gap frequently slows down high-potential projects in the region.
From AqlanX, Demetrio Russo stated that the Centre is designed to foster a full ecosystem where government, enterprise, and academia collaborate seamlessly. TECOM Group’s Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi further positioned the launch within Dubai’s broader innovation agenda, including the Dubai Digital Economy Strategy and the city’s emerging AI blueprint.
UAE’s AI Vision One-Year Skills Commitment
In a notable boost for local talent development, Microsoft UAE has committed to a one-year training and upskilling programme. The initiative covers:
- AI fundamentals training
- Certification vouchers
- Advanced learning pathways
- A Women in Cyber programme delivered in partnership with G42
With talent shortages still a top concern among MENA startups, this investment is expected to support the UAE’s AI Vision long-term competitiveness.
