The Iraqi cabinet has granted Vodafone Global Telecommunications a license to assist in the rollout of the country’s first 5G network, as reported by the state-run Iraq News Agency (INA). The decision directs the Ministry of Communications to move forward with the initiative, based on a statement from the prime minister’s media office.
However, Vodafone clarified that its involvement is being discussed as an advisory role in designing the network, rather than direct operation. “Discussions are ongoing, and no contract has been finalized,” the company told Reuters. Financial terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.
In October 2023, the Iraqi government approved a strategic plan to enhance telecommunications infrastructure by introducing 5G capabilities, e-payment services, and cybersecurity improvements. This initiative aims to position Iraq alongside the 52 countries that have already launched 5G networks. Last month, Communications Minister Hiyam Al-Yasiri announced that discussions were underway with global firms to implement these advanced technologies.
In related developments, Iraq’s telecommunications sector continues to expand, reflecting a resurgent market. Recent partnerships, including Vodafone and Telecom Egypt’s $600 million agreement to accelerate 5G deployment, and Iraq’s collaboration with Kuwait for a European telecom corridor, signal strong momentum for the region’s digital transformation.
