Google and Novastar Launch AI Lab to Back Africa's Next AI Startups

Google and Novastar Ventures have launched the Google Africa Applied AI Lab to support African AI startups with funding, mentorship, Google Cloud credits, and frontier AI tools.

The programme aims to accelerate the growth of Africa’s AI ecosystem by providing founders with access to advanced AI technologies, technical expertise, funding opportunities, and commercial support.

The partnership reflects growing confidence that Africa is emerging as a key market for applied AI, with startups increasingly deploying the technology to solve pressing challenges in healthcare, education, agriculture, and financial inclusion.

Steve Beck, Co-founder and Managing Partner at Novastar Ventures, said African entrepreneurs are using AI not merely to improve efficiency but to address fundamental development challenges with scalable technology.

He highlighted several companies within Novastar’s portfolio that demonstrate AI’s growing impact across the continent.

Healthcare provider Penda Health is using AI-powered clinical support systems to improve diagnosis and treatment decisions, while education technology company NewGlobe is deploying AI to strengthen teaching quality, learning outcomes, and accountability across public education systems.

Agritech startup Agrails is also leveraging AI to help smallholder farmers access climate-risk insurance, improving resilience against climate change.

Through the Google Africa Applied AI Lab, selected startups and researchers will receive early access to Google’s frontier AI models, technical mentorship from Google DeepMind and Google Research, Google Cloud credits, and go-to-market support.

Participants will also be eligible for equity investment and non-dilutive funding from Google, alongside mentorship and operational support from Novastar Ventures, Ventures Platform, 4DX Ventures, and Norrsken22.

Novastar said the programme is designed to help build a new generation of African AI companies capable of competing internationally while creating locally relevant solutions.

Beyond supporting entrepreneurs, the initiative will also enable Google to gain deeper insights into emerging AI use cases across African markets, helping refine its AI technologies for broader real-world applications.

As part of the partnership, Novastar Ventures will help identify high-potential founders and researchers while providing strategic guidance, industry connections, mentorship, and potential investment opportunities to support long-term growth.

Applications for the inaugural Google Africa Applied AI Lab opened on 1 July, with organisers expected to select between five and ten startups and researchers for the first cohort, which is scheduled to be announced in September.

The initiative highlights increasing collaboration between global technology companies and African venture capital firms to strengthen the continent’s AI ecosystem, foster innovation, and develop AI solutions tailored to Africa’s economic and social priorities.

Why Google and Novastar Patnership Matters to MENA

The launch signals growing investment in Africa’s AI ecosystem, creating new opportunities for collaboration between African and MENA startups, investors, and technology companies.

As the GCC accelerates investments in sovereign AI, cloud infrastructure, and startup ecosystems, stronger African AI capabilities could unlock cross-border innovation in sectors such as fintech, healthcare, agriculture, logistics, and education.

For MENA investors, the initiative also highlights a broader trend: global technology companies are increasingly partnering with regional venture capital firms to identify high-potential AI startups early.

This model could inspire similar collaborations across the Middle East, further strengthening the region’s ambitions to become a global AI innovation hub.
