Qatar has taken another decisive step in the Gulf’s intensifying AI race with the launch of Qai, a new entity mandated to develop, manage, and invest in advanced artificial intelligence infrastructure both within the country and abroad. While financial details were not disclosed, the announcement signals its growing ambition to position itself as a competitive hub for frontier technology.

Qai chairman Abdullah bin Hamad Al Misnad said the move represents a “significant milestone” in the nation’s long-term plan to deepen its AI capabilities and expand its footprint in data-driven industries. The initiative aligns with Qatar’s broader strategy of diversifying its economy beyond hydrocarbons while nurturing high-value tech ecosystems.
Its investment appetite in global deep-tech firms has been steadily accelerating. In September, the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) participated in PsiQuantum’s landmark $1 billion funding round, reinforcing its interest in quantum computing. The sovereign wealth fund has also backed high-profile players such as Elon Musk’s xAI, underlining its commitment to securing stakes in emerging general-purpose technologies.
Across the region, Gulf counterparts are pursuing similar national strategies. The UAE has already built heavyweight AI institutions such as G42, while Saudi Arabia is expanding its portfolio through entities like Humain and multi-billion-dollar domestic AI programs.
Qatar’s latest move signals that it has no intention of being left behind in what is fast becoming one of the Middle East’s most strategically important technology races.
