Katara Cultural Village, commonly known as Katara, is a vast cultural and artistic complex located on the eastern coast of Doha, Qatar. It serves as a center for cultural exchange and creativity, hosting a wide range of events, exhibitions, and performances that celebrate the region’s diverse heritage. With its unique blend of traditional and contemporary architecture, Katara attracts millions of visitors each year, offering experiences that include art galleries, theaters, world-class restaurants, and recreational facilities.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, Katara has recently partnered with Veolia Water Technologies (VWT) to launch an innovative Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) Polishing Plant. This significant achievement supports Qatar’s Environmental Development goals under the Qatar National Vision 2030 strategy by conserving freshwater resources and promoting sustainable water usage.
The TSE Polishing Plant, supplied by VWT Qatar, is designed to optimize space and power supply within Katara’s existing Energy Centre, significantly lowering project costs. With a capacity of 15,000 CMD, it is the region’s first plant of its kind, converting treated sewage effluent into high-quality demineralized water suitable for cooling tower feed and landscape irrigation.
By replacing freshwater with treated sewage effluent, the project reduces water costs from 9 QAR to 1 QAR per cubic meter and cuts energy needs for water production to just 20% compared to traditional methods. It also minimizes the water volume required for cooling tower operations.
This initiative exemplifies sustainable wastewater reuse, preserving groundwater resources, and using less energy. Veolia’s inline design technology, integral to the plant, represents an innovative solution for wastewater reuse in the region. In June 2024, Katara Project engaged Veolia Water Technologies Qatar to oversee the operation and maintenance of the plant.
Thierry Froment, CEO of Veolia Water Technologies Middle East, highlighted, “Our collaboration with Katara Project aligns with our GreenUp strategic program, aimed at assisting regions in adapting to climate change. This project not only conserves precious freshwater but also sets a new standard for efficient and sustainable water management in urban settings. By transforming treated sewage into high-quality water for irrigation and cooling, we are pioneering resource efficiency and sustainability in the region.”
Mohammed Al Meer, Director General of Katara Project, remarked, “The launch of the Treated Sewage Effluent Polishing Plant represents a groundbreaking achievement and underscores our commitment to environmental sustainability. This project, in collaboration with VWT Qatar, allows us to reduce freshwater consumption and advance Qatar National Vision 2030 goals. By using treated sewage for irrigation and cooling, we preserve critical natural resources and set a new benchmark for sustainable practices in cultural and tourist destinations.”
