
The UAE is investing $1bn to expand AI across Africa, boosting digital infrastructure, productivity, and long-term economic growth through strategic partnerships.
The United Arab Emirates has announced a $1 billion initiative to support the expansion of artificial intelligence projects across Africa, aiming to advance national development priorities and strengthen digital infrastructure.

The announcement was made by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg last weekend, underscoring the its commitment to fostering technological cooperation with African nations.
Saeed bin Mubarak Al Hajeri, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the funding would focus on enhancing digital infrastructure, increasing productivity, and improving the quality of life.
“The initiative will provide access to AI computing power, technical expertise, and global partnerships,” Al Hajeri said. “It is designed to support developing countries in overcoming critical developmental challenges through the integration of AI technologies across key sectors.”
The programme will be administered by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), part of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), in collaboration with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency, according to the state-run WAM news agency.
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of ADFD, emphasised that the initiative combines technology, financing, and strategic partnerships to strengthen long-term economic resilience. He added that the programme would enable UAE enterprises to implement high-impact AI projects, enhancing economic and technological cooperation between the UAE and African countries.
The AI-for-development initiative is part of the its broader foreign assistance programme. Since 1971, the UAE has contributed over AED 152 billion in aid to African nations, reflecting its longstanding commitment to regional development and collaboration.
