UAE Launches EXERGY to Tackle AI-Driven Energy Demands

The UAE, renowned for its innovation in emerging fields like artificial intelligence (AI) and deep technology, is confronting the rising energy consumption and carbon footprint associated with this growth.

To address these challenges, Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, introduced EXERGY, a global energy investment company aimed at meeting the increasing power demands driven by worldwide megatrends.

Speaking at the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week opening, Al Jaber highlighted the pressing need for diverse energy solutions to support AI-driven energy demands while ensuring equitable energy access.

“Even before the AI boom, global power demand was projected to rise from 9,000 GW to over 15,000 GW by 2035. However, with the rapid adoption of applications like ChatGPT, which uses ten times the energy of a single Google search, energy demand by 2050 could soar to 35,000 GW—an increase of over 250%,” Al Jaber stated.

He emphasized that no single energy source could meet this massive surge in demand and criticized policies restricting energy options as counterproductive.

“We need an all-encompassing approach,” Al Jaber explained. “That’s the philosophy behind Abu Dhabi’s latest energy innovation, EXERGY.”

EXERGY’s adaptable structure is designed to optimize energy use across the board, leveraging every unit, spark, and joule of energy to its fullest potential. The initiative focuses on investments spanning the energy spectrum, including natural gas, chemicals, low-carbon fuels, and energy infrastructure, to create a future-ready energy company.
