Qatar is increasingly attracting global innovative companies looking to expand their operations in the region, according to Eman al-Kuwari, Director of the Digital Innovation Department at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT). The influx of international firms, facilitated by the Tasmu Accelerator, is expected to create significant benefits for local entrepreneurs, startups, and tech founders, fostering collaboration and bolstering the Qatari economy.

The Tasmu Accelerator, a flagship program of the MCIT, recently drew over 540 applicants from 78 countries for its inaugural cohort, al-Kuwari revealed. After a rigorous selection process, 25 startups were chosen to participate in the six-month acceleration phase. The success of this first cohort has set a high benchmark, and al-Kuwari anticipates that future applicants will bring exceptional profiles to the program.

Following the conclusion of the 2023 cycle, the Tasmu Accelerator has announced the opening of early registration for the 2024 cohort. Reem al-Mansoori, Assistant Undersecretary of Digital Industry Affairs at MCIT, emphasized that the program is pivotal for advancing Qatar’s digital economy and establishing the country as a global tech leader. The accelerator offers a comprehensive, supportive ecosystem for international and local tech startups.

Al-Kuwari highlighted Qatar’s emergence as a tech hub, citing the upcoming Web Summit 2024 as a key milestone. Startups setting up in Qatar will benefit from the country’s strategic location, favorable business environment, and supportive programs. The Tasmu Accelerator is part of a 10-year roadmap aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030, aimed at boosting the economy, enhancing private sector competitiveness, and introducing 80 innovative solutions to the local market, to generate 800 new jobs.

During the Tasmu Accelerator 2023 Demo Day, three standout startups—Albert Health, Direk, and Fleetroot—were recognized for their pioneering solutions in healthcare, environment, and logistics, respectively. Each received a QR200,000 cash boost from their Track Champions to support their growth. The event also marked the inauguration of the Tasmu Accelerator Hub at Ooredoo HQ2, providing graduates with valuable market insights and industry expertise to facilitate their entry and expansion in the Qatari market.
